President Tarja Halonen becomes Patron of Östersjöfonden
President Tarja Halonen has been appointed Patron of Östersjöfonden. In this role, President Halonen will support the Foundation’s long-term work for the Baltic Sea and help draw attention to the people and initiatives making a difference for the sea.
Östersjöfonden was established in Åland in 1989 through a donation from businessman Anders Wiklöf and has since worked to promote and support efforts to protect the Baltic Sea environment. A central part of the Foundation’s work is its annual awards, which recognise individuals and organisations from around the Baltic Sea region for significant contributions to the sea and its environment.
“We are extremely pleased and proud that President Halonen has agreed to become Patron of Östersjöfonden. Having her support means a great deal to us and strengthens our long-term commitment to the Baltic Sea. We need strong voices that can help keep the Baltic Sea high on the agenda and inspire more people to get involved,” says Sara Arons, Managing Director of Östersjöfonden.
As Patron, President Halonen will support the work of Östersjöfonden and help raise awareness of the Foundation’s mission. The role is honorary and does not involve any operational responsibilities.
“The Baltic Sea reminds us of our mutual dependence. What happens in one part of the sea affects us all, and the challenges we face can only be addressed through long-term cooperation, both within Finland and across national borders. Protecting the Baltic Sea is a shared responsibility. I am pleased and honoured to have the opportunity, as Patron, to support Östersjöfonden’s important work for the future of the sea,” says President Tarja Halonen.
The announcement of President Halonen’s patronage coincides with Östersjöfonden’s annual award ceremony in Åland on 2 October, where this year’s four award recipients will be recognised for their contributions to the Baltic Sea.
